What are ISO Management System Standards?
ISO is continuously providing organizations with the opportunity to improve and reach world-class by utilizing the Management System Standards.
One or more of these Management System Standards can be implemented in your organization, regardless of the type, size and nature; and can help them achieve sustainable success.
Obligation of Standards Certification in Pakistani Product and Service Industry
As Pakistan is a growing economy, aiming to become a world-class provider of products and services, ISO and PS Standards are now becoming obligatory by the relevant national and provincial regulatory authorities.
A Whole New Business Perspective – “Obligation” equals “Opportunity!”
As the implementation of these international and national standards (QMS ISO 9001, EMS ISO 14001, OHSMS ISO 45001, FSMS ISO 22000, ISMS ISO 27001, Halal PS 3733) becomes a necessity for survival, the industry is also provided with an opportunity to put their world-class products and services face-to-face with other international brands. Hence an opportunity to reap the fruit of the efforts put in implementing these standards and getting the industries certified.
A brief introduction to the standards:
The standards mentioned below are in highly demanded in the current market, due to the obligations from regulatory authorities, and also due to the business avenues they are opening.
What is ISO 9001:2015 (QMS: Quality Management System)
ISO 9001:2015 (QMS) specifies requirements for a quality management system when an organization:
- needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and
- aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
What is ISO 14001:2015 (EMS: Environmental Management System)
ISO 14001:2015 (EMS) specifies the requirements for an environmental management system that an organization can use to enhance its environmental performance. It is intended for use by organizations seeking to fulfill their environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability.
It helps organizations achieve the intended outcomes of environmental management, adding value towards the environment, the organizations and their interested parties. These outcomes include:
- enhancement of environmental performance;
- fulfillment of compliance obligations;
- achievement of environmental objectives.
What is ISO 45001:2018 (OHSMS: Occupational Health Safety Management system)
ISO 45001:2018 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, and gives guidance for its use, to enable organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OH&S performance.
Intended outcomes of an OH&S management system include:
- continual improvement of OH&S performance;
- fulfillment of legal requirements and other requirements;
- achievement of OH&S objectives.
What is ISO 22001:2018 (FSMS: Food Safety Management System)?
The ISO 22001:2018 addresses food safety management. The consequences of unsafe food can be serious and ISO’s food safety management standards help organizations identify and control food safety hazards. As many of today’s food products repeatedly cross national boundaries, International Standards are needed to ensure the safety of the global food supply chain.
What is ISO 27001:2013 (ISMS: Information Security Management System)?
The ISO/IEC 27001:2013 helps organizations keep information assets secure. Using this standard will help your organization manage the security of assets such as financial information, intellectual property, employee details or information entrusted to you by third parties.
What is PS 3733:2016 (Halal Certification)?
The PS 3733:2016 defines the requirements for ‘Halal food safety management system’ implementable throughout the food chain, i.e., during preparation, processing, packaging, labeling, handling, distribution, serving and the overall aspects of the premises dealing with and storing Halal food and its products.
This Standard is applicable together with the laws of Islamic Republic of Pakistan and other relevant standards and guidelines for local/import/export purposes.

Unleash Your Export Potential: SMEDA Offers 70% Grant for International Business Certifications
Is your Pakistani business ready to stop competing only locally and start winning globally? The barrier to entry for international markets isn’t always your product quality; it’s your credentials.
For thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan, the cost of obtaining prestigious, international certifications like ISO, HACCP, or Halal has been the biggest roadblock to exporting. SMEDA (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority) is now knocking that roadblock down.
In a powerful move to boost national exports, SMEDA has announced the **SME Certification & International Accreditation Grant Program for 2024-25.** This isn’t just a government initiative; it’s a direct strategic investment in your company’s future.
The Problem: When Quality Alone Isn’t Enough
Imagine having a phenomenal manufacturing process or a unique food product, but being blocked by a massive European or American retailer because your facility is not ISO 9001 (Quality Management) or HACCP (Food Safety) certified. This is the reality for many Pakistani businesses. These certifications are no longer “optional extras”; they are global business prerequisites.
The SMEDA Solution: We’ll Pick Up 70% of the Check
The cost of certification can be high. As detailed in SMEDA’s official price list reference, basic standard certifications can start from PKR 160,000 for minimums, while sector-specific ones like Halal (up to 400k) or Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP up to 460k) go significantly higher. For high-level standards like BRC or Organic, costs can exceed PKR 1 Million.
This new grant program directly addresses this pain point by offering a 70% matching grant.
This is what this means in real money:
For Certification Costs: SMEDA will cover 70% of the cost, up to a maximum grant of PKR 800,000.
For Related Consultancy: SMEDA will cover 70% of the cost, up to a maximum grant of PKR 200,000.
You only have to provide the remaining 30%. This makes high-ticket certifications, like those listed here suddenly affordable for growing businesses.
Are You Eligible? Yes, if you:
The eligibility criteria, outlined in detail on SMEDA’s website and newspaper announcements, are designed to support genuine, formal SMEs ready for growth. The key requirements are:
- Be a registered business with a valid NTN and be on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL).
- Fall within the National SME Policy 2021 definition: Annual sales turnover up to PKR 800 million.
- Be a formal SME: have a valid registration number.
- Have an active Business Bank Account. All grant funds are reimbursed through this account.
- Have an ownership stake in the business.
(Note: Applicants must not have received another government certification grant in the same financial year, 2024-25 or later. The business must have been operational for at least 5 years as per some public notices.)
This is a Race: First-Come, First-Served Across All Regions!
Do not wait. This program is being executed on a strict First-Come, First-Served basis. To ensure national representation, the grant is distributed across 07 regions of Pakistan: Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan. The number of slots is limited per region.
Wait – What if I just got certified? If you obtained an eligible certification against a standard on or after July 01, 2024, and it remains valid for at least six months from your application date, you can still apply!
Step-by-Step: Your Path to Global Ready Status
- Review the full Terms and Conditions on the SMEDA website immediately.
- Select your Target Certification based on your business sector and export goals. Refer to the price list to gauge typical costs. (e.g., ISO 22000 for food, Oeko-TEX for textiles).
- Ensure all your business documentation (NTN, ATL status, Bank Account, Registration) is current and digital-ready.
- Apply Online: Visit www.smeda.org to access the application portal and more guidelines.
- Reimbursement Model: Once approved, you select and pay for the certified body and consultancy (through formal channels, no cash). You then submit proof of payment and successful certification to SMEDA for a 70% reimbursement.
The time to think “small” is over. This is Pakistan’s era of “Global Ready.” Let SMEDA & Synergy Business Consulting help you unlock the potential of your SME. Your international breakthrough starts with this single application.
